The best Archers from around the lands once again gathered at the Skara Brae Fairegrounds to compete in June's "Best Shot in the Realm" (BSR) Archery Tournament. The monthly event, paid for and sponsored by the Society of Archers (S|A) Baja Chapter, has been held on the Baja shard for almost four years, and has come to be one of Britannia's longest running and most unique events!
As the mid-day sun drew to its end, the finest shots from around the realm began to arrive at the Fairegrounds outside of Skara Brae. One by one these expert Archers came to the Fairegrounds, to test their mettle against the land's best, and to mingle with their brethren in this special event. The sight of dozens of bowmen united together is truly an amazing spectacle in of itself! Many faces from times past arrived, Archers who share in competition, but also relish in the friendship and comaraderie that has evolved among them after years of gathering for this event. It has truly grown a brotherhood, a bond unlike any other in their lives. This is their event, their moment to shine, the day of the Archers!
It would not be a BSR without the sight of Frigin Azim at the Fairegrounds. Azim has competed in almost every BSR to date, and has not only come out on top several times, but was crowned the Grand Champion in 2003, after outshooting the other monthy winners at the season-ending "BSR Tournament of Champions".
Azim was soon joined by Lady Sex Kittin, another long-time competitor of the event and the defending champion from May. She has proven herself to be one of the BSR's best, competing highly in the event time and time again, with several victories to call her own. Kittin would attempt to become only the third person in BSR history to successfully defend a monthly title.
Lezander D'Flaye was also in attendance this past month, a BSR persona to truly be called unique! Lezander bursted onto the scene in 2004, claiming victory at his first ever BSR in resounding fashion! He then cemented his legend by guaranteeing he would defend his title the following month, a feat that had not been accomplished since the very first BSR's back in 2001. Lezander proved true to his words, outshooting the pack and becoming only the second person in the BSR's illustrious history to repeat as champion.
One of the BSR's most delightful personas, and one of its best competitiors, Taylor, is a common face at the event. Taylor arrived at the Fairegrounds riding on an air of confidence this year, having already laid claim to a title in April and shooting well each month. But he was clearly focused on more, as he took to the buttes and began fine tuning his shot within minutes of his arrival.
As a group of long-time competitors of the event, led by Windrunner, arrived at the Fairegrounds, the amount of talent that had gathered for June's competition was staggering! Many new faces were mixed into the crowd as well, including a large contigent of Archers from Lands End, adding a twist of new talent to a very experienced field.
The Archers of S|A arrived in great numbers as well, competing for pride amongst the guild, and a spot in this year's Tournament of Champions. Many of S|A's finest were in attendance, including Moving Target, Minerva, and Popper, all consistently in the running seemingly each and every month. It would not be complete without the sight of Bill and Alia, the Artic Archers of S|A, who have both competed in the BSR for many years, and have come to be a symbol of what the event is all about. Ahebban, Lazarus, Afton, and several other regulars were in attendance as well, making it an enormous showing of Archers from the S|A Baja Chapter.
As has become custom at the BSR, the scene was completed with a beautiful feast and setting, provided by the one and only Lil Debi. And so, as each competitor and spectator alike grabbed their final food and drink and headed to the buttes... the event began!!
Living up to the level of talent that had gathered, the vast majority of the Archers blazed through the first few rounds of the competition, making them seem like mere target practice. An astounding number of Archers remained after the third round, and all were given a chance to do the near-impossible: duplicate the mythical Robinhood-round. But alas, this feat proved ellusive, and for the third consecutive month the field was broken up into head-to-head pairings to determine our winner.
After many thrilling and suspenseful pairings, the field was widdled to two, and what an interesting final pairing it was! Roxie, a long-time competitor of the event, would meet Taylor in the finals. Not only were these two long-time friends, but also in-laws, and had joked many days about meeting in the finals. The joke was no more, as the two squared off for June's title!
Roxie shot extremely well in the final pairing, but Taylor was not to be outdone this day. Having shot the 'eyes out of the target all afternoon, Taylor continued his winning ways and came out on top of his good friend in the final pairing. For the second time in a mere three months, Taylor was crowned our winner, and increased his chances of winning the ToC, by eliminating one of the seats. And so, the following Archers will be represented in the season-ending BSR Tournament of Champions, who's growing pot has now reached an astounding 1.5 MILLION gold!!
Ector (2004 Grand Champion)
Ariana (February's BSR Winner)
Katsumoto (March's BSR Winner)
Taylor (April's BSR Winner & June's BSR Winner)
Lady Sex Kittin (May's BSR Winner)
Congratulations to Taylor on his remarkable shooting and victory last month! It will be exciting to see if Taylor can become the third person to successfully defend a BSR title. One thing is for sure, there will be plenty of talent on hand to make him earn it if he does!
The Society of Archers have announced a date for July's "Best Shot in the Realm", which will be held on Sunday, July 17th, at the Skara Brae Fairegrounds in Trammel. As always, signups for the event will take place at 7:30pm in the Eastern sky (4:30pm Shard Time/PST).
